Q:

How do I install a CAB file on my SmartPhone?
|
|
|
|
A:
|
This CAB file will install directly on your device if you purchased it via an OTA (over the air) connection. If instead you downloaded it first to your PC then it is easy to install it manually on to your device.
Make sure your device is connected to your PC and that you have a live ActiveSync connection open.
Click on the Explore button in Active sync to launch the remote file explorer for your device.
Click on `My Smartphone` and then `Storage` to view the `\Storage` folder.
Click on `Windows` and then `Start Menu` and then `Accessories` to navigate to the
`\Storage\windows\Start Menu\Accessories` folder.
Copy this CAB file that you want to install to the `\Storage\windows\Start Menu\Accessories` folder on your device (by drag and drop or copy and paste) from the folder where is resides on your PC.
Now that the CAB file is on your device, you can go to the device itself (undock it if desired) and launch it by calling up the `Start` menu and then the `Accessories` folder (you may need to select `More` to view additional choices to see the Accessories folder).
The CAB file that you copied over to the device should now show up as one of the items in the accessories folder. Highlight it and select it to launch it and to initiate the install process. Answer any questions that the install process asks and the CAB file should install the application that it contains on to your device.
Note: The system will automatically remove the CAB file from your Accessories folder after the installation is complete.

PC Based Install: What do I do after downloading the "zip" file?
|
|
|
|
A:
|
Typically when purchase our Windows Mobile applications online from your PC, you will finish the checkout process by downloading a Zip file.
A Zip file is a compressed file format that usually contains a number of individual files within it.
There are a number of different utilities available that will "Unzip" or extract the contents of a zip file for you and many windows machines have some form of a utility already installed on them to deal with zip files. Windows XP for example treats Zip files as a compressed folder so with Windows XP you don't need to do anything special to extract the contents of a Zip file besides opening the compressed folder to get access to its contents.
If however, you don't have Windows XP or a utility on your machine already you can download a free evaluation version of WinZip from:
http://www.winzip.com/
Use your unzip utility to extract the files contained in the Zip download to a new and separate directory. Inside that directory you will find a "setup.exe" that will install the application that you have downloaded.
Typically with our Windows Mobile applications the desktop installation zip file contains 3 files: Setup.exe, Setup.ini and the application CAB file that will have a file name related to the application name with .CAB as the extension.
Depending on the Folder Options that are set for your Explorer window, you may or may not be able to see the three letter file extensions for each of these files (.exe, .ini, .cab). If the file extensions are not showing up in your file explorer, you can still tell the two Setup files apart by the graphic icon that your PC uses to display the file.
Setup.exe shows up as a small image of a white box of software with a blue stripe around the box as a red and yellow line coming out of the box and trailing behind a small grey rocket that is launching out of the box. The rocket trail may also look like a red and yellow un-capitalized letter e. This is the file that you run on your PC to start the installation process.
The other two file icons look like a notepad of paper with a yellow gear on the right side for the setup.ini file (which you don’t need to bother with, it is used by the install process) and the small 2 drawer blue filing cabinet is the application CAB file (which you can also ignore unless you for some reason need or want to install the CAB file manually to your device as described elsewhere in this Q&A).
Before you double click on and launch the Setup.exe file from your PC, you should also make sure you have your Windows Mobile device docked to your PC and connected through ActiveSync.
After launching the Setup.exe file an installation wizard will step you through a series of screens. If you are unsure of how to respond to any of those screens, the default is a safe option to choose.
The installation wizard first copies the files to a temporary folder on your PC and from there it installs the necessary files onto your device through the activesync connection.
